Toronto police chief announces arrests in deadly Salsa on St. Clair shooting that left 2 dead, 5 injured; press conference set for Friday

Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw confirmed that arrests have been made in the Salsa on St. Clair shooting, which occurred on July 11, resulting in the deaths of Shaquan Quashie, 25, and Cesar Vernaza, 20, and injuring five others.¹²

The shooting took place during a popular street festival attended by approximately 13,000 people, leading to widespread panic as gunfire erupted. The police described the incident as a “targeted event,” and the victims were identified shortly after the incident.

Demkiw stated, “I appreciate the opportunity, given that Taste of Danforth is coming. I can tell you that late yesterday evening, I’ve been advised there have been arrests made in that investigation,” indicating ongoing efforts to ensure public safety at major events.

The police chief has promised more details will be shared during a press conference scheduled for Friday, as the investigation continues. The shooting has raised concerns about safety at large gatherings, prompting police to increase their presence at future events this summer.⁴

The second day of the festival was canceled as authorities continued their investigation into the incident, which has left the community shaken.

“All five have non-life-threatening injuries,” police reported regarding the injured individuals, who were taken to the hospital following the shooting.
