Taiwanese President William Lai Ching-te arrived in Eswatini on Saturday, marking a significant diplomatic engagement despite Beijing's disapproval. This surprise visit follows China's efforts to thwart his travel plans due to rising tensions over Taiwan's international recognition.

On social media, Lai emphasized, "Taiwan will never be deterred by external pressures. Our resolve & commitment are underpinned by the understanding that Taiwan will continue to engage with the world - no matter the challenges faced." His visit aims to foster deeper ties in economic, agricultural, cultural, and educational fields with Eswatini, where Taiwan maintains formal relations, amidst growing diplomatic isolation.

China's foreign ministry sharply criticized Lai’s visit, labeling it a political stunt, claiming he secretly boarded a government aircraft for the trip, and calling him an “international laughing stock.” In response, Lai's administration noted that any attempts by China to dictate Taiwanese affairs are viewed as futile. The Taiwan Affairs Office has even referred to Lai as the “rat” who “skulked” to Eswatini, provoking further tensions over perceived legitimacy.

In a recent statement, the Taiwanese security official remarked that the “arrive then announce” approach is common in diplomacy, aiding in avoiding potential external disruptions during sensitive engagements. Following the visit, Lai reaffirmed that “the 23 million people of Taiwan have the right to engage with the world”, rebuffing Chinese assertions on sovereignty.
