Sound Transit light rail service was interrupted for several hours on Sunday following a slow-speed derailment at the International District/Chinatown Station late Saturday night.123
The train derailed just before midnight while heading to the southbound platform, coinciding with the end of an Ed Sheeran concert at Lumen Field.
No passengers were on board, and no injuries were reported. This incident marks only the second recorded derailment since service began in 2009, according to Sound Transit officials.
Recovery efforts and an investigation into the cause are ongoing.
Service was suspended for approximately eight hours, affecting the 1 Line from Capitol Hill to SODO and the 2 Line from Capitol Hill to Judkins Park.
During this time, buses were deployed to shuttle passengers between the impacted stations.
Riders expressed frustration over the disruption, with one passenger, Robert Gardner, noting, “They [the buses] are literally packed,” as he and his family attempted to reach the airport.
Another traveler, Nikki Rainey, shared her anxiety over the service changes, stating, “I bought my little light rail ticket and then heard there’s changes, and I was like ‘please, God no,’” highlighting the impact on travelers.
Sound Transit is still investigating the cause of the derailment, which has raised concerns among commuters and officials alike.
“Wildfire smoke from out-of-control blazes in central British Columbia that have burned well over a quarter million acres is expected to spread into Western Washington by Monday morning. Those with respiratory medical issues should remain indoors with better-quality air, and N-95 masks may be a good idea for everyone in the region.”
