Samsung's latest foldable phones—the Galaxy Z Fold8, Fold8 Ultra, and Flip8—were unveiled at a recent Galaxy Unpacked event in London. The Fold8 Ultra, priced at $2,099.99, features an 8-inch AMOLED display and a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor.124
The Fold8 Ultra boasts impressive specifications, including a 5,000mAh battery, which is among the highest in the smartphone market today. The device measures 4.1mm when unfolded, maintaining the same weight as its predecessor, the Z Fold 7. Notably, the camera system has been upgraded to include a 200MP wide camera and a 50MP ultrawide lens, a significant improvement from the previous model's 12MP ultrawide camera.
Samsung's senior vice president of mobile product management, Drew Blackard, emphasized that the redesign was driven by user experience rather than competition with Apple, which is expected to launch its first foldable iPhone soon. Blackard stated, “Media consumption has really changed a lot since the first one we launched in 2019.”6
The Galaxy Z Flip8, starting at $1,200, continues the trend of foldable devices, while the Z Fold8 starts at $1,900. Blackard noted that Samsung's seven-year head start in the foldable market gives it a competitive edge, allowing it to offer three distinct form factors compared to what he anticipates will be a single offering from Apple.
As foldable technology evolves, Samsung aims to maintain its leadership in durability, design, and functionality, setting the stage for an exciting future in mobile devices.
“The Z Fold 8 Ultra starts at $2,099.99, a $100 increase over its predecessor, while the Fold 8 and Flip 8 are priced at $1,900 and $1,200 respectively. Samsung senior vice president Drew Blackard highlighted the company's seven-year lead and predicted competitors will likely offer only one form factor.”
