Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk revealed that the suspect was detained on August 7 and was recruited by Russian security services. Tusk stated, "He was inconvenient from the point of view of Putin's regime," indicating the Kremlin's view of the intended target as a threat.
The FSB reported that Pirogov left Russia after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, establishing contact with Polish military intelligence in April 2022. He was tasked with collecting classified information about Russian weapons used in the ongoing conflict. The indictment also alleged that he made cryptocurrency transfers to support Ukraine's armed forces and organized equipment deliveries from Poland to Ukraine.
Since the invasion of Ukraine, Russia has tightened its espionage and treason laws, increasing the maximum sentence for treason from 20 to 25 years and broadening the definition of state treason to encompass a wider range of foreign contacts.
