- The record industry has proposed an AI labeling system for streaming platforms to help distinguish AI-generated music from human-made tracks.
- A survey of 9,000 listeners found that 97% could not distinguish AI songs from human-made ones, yet 80% wanted fully AI tracks clearly labeled.
A coalition of music industry groups, led by the RIAA and IFPI, is launching a labeling initiative to identify AI-generated music. The program proposes two tags: “AI-generated” for tracks created entirely by AI, and “AI-assisted” for those primarily human-made but incorporating AI elements.
A recent survey of 9,000 listeners revealed that 97% could not distinguish between AI and human-made songs, yet 80% expressed a desire for clear labeling of AI tracks. RIAA Chairman Mitch Glazier emphasized that fans want to know when a real person is involved in the music they enjoy.

The proposed tags would function similarly to the “explicit” content markers currently used in streaming services. This initiative comes as AI-generated music becomes increasingly prevalent, prompting concerns about transparency and the potential impact on human creativity.
IFPI CEO Vikki Oakley and Glazier stated, “Fans want to know whether and how generative AI has been used in the music to which they listen.” The Digital Media Association (DiMA) is monitoring the situation, advocating for reliable AI data to accompany recordings. Meanwhile, streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music have already begun implementing voluntary AI music disclosure systems.
As the industry navigates the complexities of AI integration, the coalition aims to ensure that both artists and fans are informed about the role of AI in music production.
The initiative reflects a growing recognition of the need for transparency in an evolving musical landscape, where AI's role continues to expand.
“A survey of 9,000 listeners revealed that 97% could not tell AI songs from human-made ones, highlighting the need for clear labeling. Additionally, 80% of respondents expressed a desire for fully AI tracks to be distinctly marked on streaming platforms.”
