At least 18 people are missing in the South China Sea following the sinking of a Vietnamese cargo ship on Friday evening. The vessel, measuring 70 metres (230 feet) long and capable of carrying up to 999 tonnes, had 62 people aboard when it went down.1234
Rescue operations commenced after the ship sent a distress flare, which was detected by Chinese authorities approximately 24 hours later. Since the incident, 44 people have been rescued, while search efforts continue for the remaining missing individuals, all of whom are Vietnamese nationals.
In response to the emergency, China has deployed six vessels and a rescue helicopter, and Vietnam has also contributed a ship to the rescue mission. The ongoing search highlights the collaborative efforts between the two nations in addressing maritime emergencies in the region.
