Re-polling started today at 15 booths in the South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, following serious allegations of EVM tampering, including reports that buttons were covered with tape. The Election Commission (EC) voided the previous polling held on
April 29 due to complaints of rigging and booth jamming.
The
voting hours are set from
7 am to 6 pm, allowing voters to participate once again. Numerous voters were spotted queuing outside polling booth number 117 at Bagda Junior High School in Diamond Harbour Assembly constituency as re-polling commenced.
West Bengal's Leader of Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, remarked on the re-polling decision, saying, "
the decision in Magrahat Paschim is welcome but added that repolling should have been conducted in more booths in Diamond Harbour and across the entire Falta segment.” The EC had previously ordered the re-poll following electoral malpractice concerns, citing that the situation demanded a review.
The focused re-polling includes
11 booths in Magrahat Paschim and
four booths in Diamond Harbour, both of which were part of the second phase of the state elections.
TMC leader Shashi Panja expressed concerns, alleging the BJP attempted to provoke other parties to instigate large-scale repolling to "
defame Bengal." Voters and officials alike hope that the revised process will restore integrity in the electoral system.
