A preliminary investigation report on the Air India flight AI-171 crash was published by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) on July 12, 2025. Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, with all probable causes being examined.12
The crash occurred shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on June 12, 2025, resulting in 260 fatalities, including 229 passengers, 12 crew members, and 19 individuals on the ground.5
In response to inquiries from CPI(M) MP John Brittas, Mohol stated, “The investigation is in progress. All probable causes leading to the accident are being investigated.” He also noted that an interim statement was published on June 12, 2026, in accordance with ICAO Annex 13 requirements.
Concerns have been raised regarding the “selective disclosure” of cockpit voice recorder (CVR) extracts in the preliminary report, which some allege has led to speculation about pilot conduct. Brittas questioned whether the final report has been delayed beyond the indicative one-year timeline set by ICAO standards and if families of victims have raised concerns about transparency in the investigation.7
Mohol assured that the AAIB is conducting its investigation transparently and that the final report will be published upon completion of the investigation.
