Initially aimed at bringing the unbanked into the formal financial system, PMJDY has expanded its reach, with 45.95 crore accounts in rural and semi-urban areas and 32.92 crore female beneficiaries. The scheme has seen a remarkable increase in account ownership, growing from 14.72 crore accounts in 2015 to 59.09 crore today, a nearly fourfold increase. Deposits have surged from ₹15,670 crore in March 2015 to ₹3.16 lakh crore, marking a 20-fold rise.
The programme's success is reflected in the average balance per account, which has increased from ₹1,065 in March 2015 to over ₹5,350 currently, indicating a shift towards active savings. Additionally, 41.29 crore RuPay debit cards have been issued, enhancing access to financial services. The JAM (Jan Dhan-Aadhaar-Mobile) framework has facilitated direct benefit transfers for 327 government schemes, saving over ₹3.48 lakh crore by eliminating ineligible beneficiaries.

As PMJDY celebrates its 12th anniversary, it stands as a testament to India's commitment to financial inclusion, with a significant demographic reach and a focus on empowering women and rural communities.
“Women hold about 56% of all PMJDY accounts, and 77.8% of accounts are in rural and semi-urban areas. The scheme has issued over 40 crore RuPay cards with built-in accident cover of Rs 2 lakh, and the JAM trinity has saved over Rs 3.48 lakh crore by removing ineligible beneficiaries.”
