A parliamentary panel has concluded that all charges against Justice Yashwant Varma are 'proven', following an inquiry that found his explanations regarding the presence of cash in his residence 'evasive and unsatisfactory'.
The three-member committee, led by Supreme Court Justice Aravind Kumar, submitted its findings to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla in May. The report, which includes oral and documentary evidence, was laid before both Houses of Parliament.156
The inquiry was prompted by a fire that broke out in Justice Varma's official residence on March 14, 2025. Firefighters discovered large amounts of burnt currency in a storeroom during their response to the blaze. The committee determined that Justice Varma had 'active or tacit control' over the storeroom where the cash was found.
Despite his resignation from the Delhi High Court, the Law Ministry has yet to notify his departure, leaving removal proceedings against him effectively stalled. The Lok Sabha panel emphasized that Justice Varma 'failed to furnish a satisfactory explanation' regarding the cash's presence and ownership, further complicating his legal standing.2
