Pakistan's Supreme Court has ordered the transfer of Imran Khan, the former prime minister, from Adiala prison to Shifa International Hospital, a decision made on Tuesday. This ruling comes after months of requests from Khan's party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).1
Khan's lawyer, Uzair Bhandari, confirmed that a three-member bench mandated the formation of a medical board to oversee Khan's treatment, which will include his sister, Dr Uzma Khan, and his personal physician, Dr Faisal Sultan.
The next hearing is set for September 16, and Khan is expected to remain hospitalized until at least that date. This marks the longest duration Khan will be outside jail since his imprisonment in August 2023 for corruption-related convictions, which he and his party claim are politically motivated.23
Senior PTI leader Zulfi Bukhari emphasized that the ruling supports the party's stance that Khan requires independent, specialized medical treatment outside of Adiala jail. Government officials have stated that any transfer of Khan necessitates judicial authorization rather than executive discretion.
