Starting from pole position, Piastri led the race from start to finish, securing his fifth victory of the season and helping McLaren achieve a 1-2 finish with teammate Lando Norris.

The race unfolded over 66 laps under warm, sunny conditions with ambient temperatures in the high 20s. Most drivers switched to medium tyres for their second stint, with many leaders opting for soft tyres in the final stint to maximize performance.

A chaotic moment occurred on Lap 55 when Kimi Antonelli lost control of his Mercedes and ended up in the gravel, prompting a safety car period. This allowed several drivers to pit for fresh tyres, setting up a late-race shootout.

"Oscar Piastri led into Turn 1 on the opening lap of the Spanish GP and wins the 2025 ahead of his team-mate after a late race Safety Car shootout," the race report noted.

Max Verstappen, the reigning champion, was involved in a collision with George Russell while defending his position. Although Russell completed the pass, Verstappen received a 10-second penalty, dropping him to 10th place.

"Russell began to chase down the reigning champion, with Verstappen running off the road in order to defend after making contact. He was advised to let Russell by, only for the two to collide... the collision was quickly put under investigation and awarded a 10 second penalty," the report detailed.

Charles Leclerc secured a podium finish for Ferrari, with George Russell finishing fourth and Nico Hulkenberg fifth for Sauber. Lewis Hamilton followed in sixth place.

With this win, Piastri now leads the drivers' championship by 10 points over Norris, while McLaren leads the constructors' standings.
