Former CDS Gen Anil Chauhan clarified that Indian forces did not target Pakistan's Kirana Hills, which reportedly houses a nuclear facility, during Operation Sindoor. He explained that loitering munitions sent to Sargodha may have inadvertently struck a nearby hill after failing to find a target.13
Chauhan stated, “Before those strikes, we had sent in a lot of loitering munitions to Sargodha, and Kirana Hills is about 10 km north of Sargodha. So the loitering munition is looking for radars which are in and around Sargodha, and it has a time span, which means it will loiter for about two hours, and once it does not find a target, it comes down and hits somewhere.”
He added that this could explain the smoke seen in images shared by Pakistani media, which fueled speculation about the operation's impact on Kirana Hills. Operation Sindoor, launched in May 2025, targeted nine terror infrastructure sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir, resulting in the deaths of over 100 terrorists as retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack.
Chauhan emphasized that while major parts of the operation have concluded, it is “still ongoing.” He also supported Air Marshal A K Bharti, who previously confirmed that Kirana Hills was not targeted during the operation, stating, “We did not target Kirana Hills.”2
