OpenAI's longtime COO Brad Lightcap is leaving to 'start something new'; he reflects on building operations and business teams

Brad Lightcap, OpenAI's COO, announced his departure to 'start something new,' reflecting on his impactful tenure since 2018. He noted, “I had the privilege of building the first versions of most of our operations and business teams”, highlighting the growth of teams under strong leadership.¹

Lightcap, who transitioned from CFO to COO, played a crucial role in shaping the company's operational framework. He stated, “Over the last few months, I’ve been focused on the next horizon and what would stand in the way of mission success”, indicating his commitment to OpenAI's mission even as he moves on.

His departure comes amid a broader executive shakeup at OpenAI, which has seen significant changes in leadership roles, including the recent exit of Fidji Simo, the company’s No. 2 executive. Lightcap's reflections underscore the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for OpenAI as it navigates this transitional phase.
