Nothing OS 5.0 based on Android 17 'coming soon' with August 25 unveiling; Phone (1), Phone (2), and CMF Phone 1 miss the cut

Nothing has announced that its Nothing OS 5.0, based on Android 17, will be unveiled on August 25 at 11:20 AM BST. The update promises features like a fleshed-out desktop interface, free-form window support, and enhanced AI integration, but notably, the Phone (1), Phone (2), and CMF Phone 1 will not receive the update.¹²⁷⁸

The company has indicated that the rollout may begin with a closed beta, as beta testing for the previous version started in July 2025. Given that timeline, August 25 feels too soon for a general rollout, but it could mark the start of a public beta program. Early beta testers have reportedly seen redesigned animations and interface tweaks, although these details remain unofficial until the announcement.³⁶

A stable rollout is tentatively expected in November 2026, but this has not been confirmed. Ten devices are slated for the update, including the Phone (3), Phone (4a) series, and Phone (2a) series. The cutoff for the Phone (1), Phone (2), and CMF Phone 1 aligns with Nothing's policy of three major OS updates per device, although they will continue to receive security patches through mid-2027.⁴

As CEO Carl Pei has emphasized, the company is committed to expanding AI integration, with the Glyph Interface expected to play a more significant role in the new update.
