North Korea has firmly denied any recent communication with U.S. President Donald Trump, despite his assertions of a potential meeting with Kim Jong Un later this year.

Kim Yo Jong, the North Korean leader's sister and a key adviser, stated, “As for reports coming out of Washington that there has recently been communication between the leaders of North Korea and the United States, I know absolutely nothing about it”. She emphasized that Trump's recent military drill reductions were “not even worth commenting on” and did not alter the “provocative and aggressive” nature of the exercises.34

Earlier this week, Trump ordered a scaling down of the annual war games with South Korea, which have long been contentious between the U.S. and North Korea. Despite this, Kim Yo Jong criticized the U.S. for its “hostile policy” and stated that military activities against North Korea continue unabated.1

Trump, who has previously met with Kim three times, is seeking to revive dialogue amid domestic challenges and a stalemate in his foreign policy, particularly regarding Iran. He remarked, “I know Kim Jong Un very well, and he’s going to be fine as long as we have a smart president”.

The situation escalated when North Korea launched around 10 short-range ballistic missiles into the sea, indicating ongoing tensions. Kim Yo Jong warned that if the U.S. perceives its actions as “goodwill gestures,” it will not receive the desired response.

Despite the current tensions, she assured Trump that her brother holds “fond personal memories and feelings” from their previous meetings, hinting at a complex relationship between the two leaders.

Key Insight
“Kim Yo Jong dismissed the reduction of Ulchi Freedom Shield as 'unworthy of comment' and said it does not change the 'provocative and offensive' nature of the war games. Pyongyang launched about 10 short-range ballistic missiles into the sea, while Seoul estimates North Korea has 80 to 120 nuclear warheads.”
