Prime Minister Lawrence Wong expressed disbelief and shock regarding the inappropriate messages exchanged by former minister Faishal Ibrahim, who resigned from the People’s Action Party (PAP) amid harassment accusations. Wong stated, "If this matter had happened to any other MP in the PAP, we would have done the same thing."1234
Faishal's resignation followed a detailed email complaint from a woman, which prompted an investigation. Wong noted that while there was a temptation to make an exception for Faishal due to his two decades of public service, it was crucial to uphold the same standards for all MPs. “Doing so will only cause more damage and harm to Singapore,” Wong added.789
Despite the support Faishal received from the Malay-Muslim community, Wong emphasized that the matter had to be treated as a public issue. “This incident does not in any way diminish the significant contributions he has made to Singapore over the past 20 years,” Wong remarked, acknowledging the setback for the government and the community.1011
The police were called to investigate the accusations, but no criminal action was taken. Wong had initially hoped to find a way for Faishal to remain in office, but concluded that the situation was no longer private. “We certainly took pains to listen to Faishal's explanations as well,” Wong stated, highlighting the importance of an objective process in addressing the allegations.
Mr Zaqy Mohamad has since taken over as minister-in-charge of Muslim affairs, ensuring continuity in leadership.
