NHS England Midlands has made a groundbreaking move by selecting Heidi Healthcare as its sole supplier for AI-powered voice technology (AVT), aiming to revolutionize clinical documentation across 1,239 GP practices and over 70,000 clinicians. This initiative is part of a £10 billion (US$13.5 billion) digital overhaul of the NHS over three years.12
The new procurement framework allows for a standardized deployment of AVT, marking the first and largest implementation of its kind within the NHS. Performance metrics indicate a 23.5% increase in direct patient interaction time during appointments and an 8.2% reduction in overall appointment length when AVT is utilized. Accident and Emergency (A&E) departments also reported a 13.4% increase in patients seen per shift.3456
Stephen Kinnock, Minister of State for Care, emphasized the importance of this innovation, stating, “By freeing up clinicians from administrative burden to spend more time with patients, we're not just improving efficiency – we're enhancing the human connection that sits at the heart of great healthcare.” The initiative aims to address hospital backlogs and improve patient care.9

In practical terms, a rheumatology service managed to reduce a six-month patient letter backlog to just 14 days, while a Same Day Emergency Care unit cut documentation time by 80%. Ravinder Sahota, Group Chief Information Officer at the Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust, noted, “Our clinicians were spending less time on documentation and more time with patients.” This collaborative effort showcases the potential of AI in transforming healthcare delivery in the UK.7810
NHS England plans to further integrate AVT into electronic patient record systems and enhance functionalities in the NHS App, Microsoft Copilot for NHS staff, and NHS Online virtual services.
“Heidi Healthcare was selected as the sole supplier, with trials showing a 23.5% increase in direct patient time and an 8.2% reduction in appointment length. Stephen Kinnock, Minister of State for Care, called the technology 'exactly the kind of innovation we need' to build an NHS fit for the future and end hospital backlogs.”
