In a letter to the Samoan prime minister, Kennedy expressed a desire to investigate the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccines following the deaths of two children who had received them.
Kennedy wrote, “I am writing this letter to you in the hope that we might be helpful to the people of your great nation,” and proposed a detailed health informatics assessment of the MMR vaccines. Despite this, the Department of Health and Human Services stated that the visit “was unrelated to vaccines.”
During his confirmation hearings, Kennedy repeatedly denied any vaccine-related purpose for the trip. When questioned by Senator Ron Wyden, he stated, “I went there, nothing to do with vaccines.” However, critics argue that his visit emboldened anti-vaccine sentiments in Samoa, which later faced a devastating measles outbreak that resulted in 83 deaths, primarily among children under 5.23
