Netanyahu blames Hamas for stalling US-backed Gaza ceasefire talks

Following the killing of senior Hamas commander Muhammad Sinwar, ceasefire negotiations have hit a deadlock as Hamas demands a permanent truce and Israeli withdrawal. US envoy Steve Witkoff and Israeli PM Netanyahu accuse Hamas of rejecting proposals, raising concerns over the conflict's prolonged impact on Gaza's humanitarian crisis.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has publicly blamed Hamas for the failure to advance US-backed ceasefire talks in Gaza, following the Palestinian group's rejection of a recent proposal by US special envoy Steve Witkoff.

Hamas claims the latest ceasefire offer differs from one they had previously agreed to, with Basem Naim, a senior Hamas official, stating the group responded positively but criticized the lack of guarantees to end the war. Hamas demands a permanent ceasefire, full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, and resumption of aid.

"Hamas should accept the framework proposal we put forward as the basis for proximity talks, which we can begin immediately this coming week," Witkoff wrote on X, calling Hamas's response totally unacceptable and a step backward.

Netanyahu echoed Witkoff's stance, blaming Hamas for the stalled negotiations. Critics have accused Netanyahu himself of delaying ceasefire progress.

The backdrop to these talks includes Israel's recent killing of Muhammad Sinwar, a top Hamas military commander, in an airstrike earlier this month. Sinwar's death was confirmed by Israeli military and Netanyahu, marking a significant blow to Hamas leadership.

"The killing of Muhammad Sinwar is a significant milestone in Israel's efforts against Hamas," Netanyahu said.

Despite this, analysts warn Hamas's overall strategy may remain unchanged, complicating peace efforts.

The Gaza conflict has resulted in devastating casualties, with Gaza health officials reporting over 54,000 deaths and 124,000 wounded since October 7.

The impasse highlights the complex challenges in achieving a ceasefire acceptable to both sides amid ongoing violence and political tensions.
