The findings reiterate that Nereid is not only roughly 220 miles (350 kilometers) across but also has an extremely eccentric orbit, taking nearly a full Earth year to complete an orbit. Nereid’s distance from Neptune fluctuates from less than 1 million miles (1.4 million kilometers) to nearly 6 million miles (9.6 million kilometers).

This research paves the way for further investigations with the James Webb Telescope to strengthen the case for Nereid as an original satellite of Neptune. Notably, Scott Sheppard of Carnegie Science remarked on the findings, calling them “an exciting result,” despite not being involved in the study.
