Naoki Yoshida, director of Final Fantasy XIV, revealed several rejected names for the game's expansions, including 'Rebellion' and 'Darkbringers'. He expressed regret for not choosing these titles due to various concerns: "
Unfortunately that was rejected for various reasons, including legal reasons".
Alongside the name revelations, Yoshida introduced a significant overhaul: a new
'Evolved Mode', intended to streamline class dynamics and enhance character individuality.
Yoshida stated,
"the Evolved Mode is supposed to streamline button-pressing while allowing new actions to swap out for a 'single button' approach." This aims to reduce the game's notorious
'hotbar bloating', addressing concerns about gameplay complexity.
The Evolved Mode builds upon the
Reborn mode—a nostalgic platform for previous job experiences, ensuring player familiarity alongside innovation. Yoshida noted,
"I knew that I didn't want to just suddenly remove what we've been used to, and that was my decision from the start." Addressing the evolution of character roles, he mentioned the emphasis on restoring
job individuality. The presentation featured significant changes to the Paladin class, merging abilities to create a streamlined experience.
Yoshida also referenced the past, urging caution against over-simplifying gameplay, noting the pitfalls of
'Star Wars Galaxies' and its
New Game Enhancements, which led to a significant decline in players. He concluded,
"I wanted to keep players engaged without sacrificing the core experience." Sources:
