The Mumbai police have filed a First Information Report (FIR) against an unidentified Victoria horse carriage operator for violating the animal cruelty ban in the city.

This action follows a complaint lodged by PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) after a resident, Urvi Shah, recorded a video on May 12 showing a horse pulling a Victoria carriage near Babulnath’s Seaface Junction in the Gamdevi area.

"The horse was subjected to cruelty and forced to carry an excessive load," said Saloni Sakaria, Mumbai coordinator for PETA.

The Bombay High Court has already prohibited the use of Victoria horse carriages for both passenger and goods transport in Mumbai, citing concerns over animal welfare.

The Gamdevi Police registered the FIR under Sections 11 and 3 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, and Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, following a detailed statement from Sakaria.

This case highlights ongoing efforts by animal rights groups and authorities to enforce laws protecting animals from exploitation and cruelty in urban settings.
