MRCB has secured a RM3.03 billion contract for the Penang Mutiara Line, facilitating the advancement of Malaysia's first metro rail project. The System Turnkey Contract was awarded to the MRCB-Theta Edge Bhd joint venture, enabling the integration of railway systems with civil construction.1

The contract encompasses seven core railway systems, including electric trains, signalling and train control, and automatic fare collection systems. As of now, 45 pile caps and 32 pier columns have been completed, with work ongoing across 14 of the 19 planned construction sections.

MRT Corp reported that 93% of the land required for the CMC1 package has been secured, thanks to collaboration between the federal and Penang governments. Soil investigation works have commenced at Silicon Island for depot construction, while site preparation at Tapak Pesta has been finalized, allowing construction to begin.245

Additionally, Bumiputera participation in the CMC1 package has surpassed 20% of the total contract value, with the main contractor actively awarding station and related subcontract packages. Tender evaluation for the next phase, Civil Main Contract 2 (CMC2), is in progress, with a contract award anticipated in November 2026.3
