Mozilla updates Firefox browser with new AI settings; 'Smart Window' enhances organization and privacy for users

Mozilla has rolled out significant updates to its Firefox browser, introducing the AI-powered 'Smart Window' feature aimed at enhancing user organization and privacy.¹²⁷⁸

The new features, announced on Tuesday, include the ability to group tabs, view visual previews of recently visited pages, and browse for answers without leaving the current window.³⁴⁵⁶

Ajit Varma, head of Firefox, emphasized the importance of privacy, stating, “That is a red line for us to make sure [Smart Window is] as private as possible.” The Smart Window feature is designed to help users pick up their work seamlessly, allowing them to organize their research effectively.

Users can opt-in to Smart Window, which utilizes AI to analyze webpage content and suggest related themes for tab grouping. This feature also provides a snapshot of previously viewed pages, enhancing the browsing experience beyond a standard history log.

Steve Truong, Firefox AI senior staff product manager, noted that the AI models are developed under a “zero-data-retention contract,” ensuring user privacy is maintained.

Future updates will introduce additional features, including AI-powered autofill for online forms and the ability to pull up “recent browsing journeys.” Mozilla aims to provide these AI enhancements without forcing them on users, maintaining an agnostic approach to AI integration in Firefox.
