Mega high tides continued to impact Southern California on Tuesday, flooding the Redondo Beach boardwalk and prompting closures along the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) in Huntington Beach. The tide peaked at 8.5 feet around 9:50 a.m., leading to precautionary measures in Newport Beach.239

According to the National Weather Service, these high tides are expected to persist through Thursday, with minor coastal flooding likely. The agency noted that tides are running 1 to 1.7 feet above astronomical predictions in Orange County and 1 to 1.5 feet above predictions in Los Angeles County.

In Newport Beach, the waterway beneath the Newport Boulevard Bridge was closed from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. to protect properties from potential flooding caused by boat wakes. The city activated water pumps and built sand berms to safeguard vulnerable neighborhoods, particularly along the Balboa Peninsula.6

The flooding follows a record tide of 8.02 feet measured at San Pedro, surpassing the previous record of 7.93 feet set in 2005. Officials warned that more significant flooding could occur where sandy beaches have eroded.

As of Tuesday morning, parts of PCH were closed between Warner Avenue and Seal Beach Boulevard, with city officials stating that the closures would allow for safe responses to the flooding conditions. Parking enforcement has been suspended to assist residents in moving vehicles from flood-prone areas.

The coastal flood warning remains in effect through 1 p.m. Thursday for Orange County, with advisories also in place for Los Angeles County.
