Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced that federal byelections will take place on August 31 in three ridings: Beaches-East York, Chicoutimi-Le Fjord, and North Vancouver-Capilano.1
The Beaches-East York riding was previously held by Nate Erskine-Smith, who resigned after losing the nomination for a provincial byelection by just 19 votes. John Tory Jr., son of former Toronto mayor John Tory, had announced his candidacy but suspended his campaign on July 13, citing a lack of a viable path to success.
In Chicoutimi-Le Fjord, voters will select a successor to Richard Martel, who resigned after being appointed to the Senate. The Liberal Party has already named Daniel Gobeil as its candidate, while the Bloc Québécois is expected to announce its candidate soon.34
The North Vancouver-Capilano seat became vacant following the appointment of Jonathan Wilkinson as Canada’s ambassador to the European Union. Advance voting will occur from August 21 to 24, and the federal Liberals need to win at least one of these three ridings to maintain their majority in the House of Commons.2
