A 26-year-old man has been arrested in Athens following the death of Scottish woman Elisabeth-Jane Ross, whose body was discovered in a suitcase on July 18.1

Ms. Ross, who traveled from Edinburgh to Greece on June 29, was last seen after July 10.

Her body was found by a homeless man in a derelict building in the Kypseli area, and authorities believe she died five to seven days prior.

Despite advanced decomposition, police identified her using fingerprints and conducted a toxicology test.

The suspect, not a Greek national, is accused of placing her body in a suitcase and abandoning it.

“It is horrific. We just can't believe it,” a friend of Ms. Ross said.

Following her death, the suspect allegedly used her bank card to withdraw money and sent messages from her phone to mislead those searching for her.

“Our thoughts are with Elisabeth’s family during this difficult time,” stated the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, which is providing consular support.

Police have charged the suspect with manslaughter, robbery, and weapons violations, and are collaborating with international law enforcement agencies, including the National Crime Agency and Police Scotland.

“We are aware of the death of a Scottish woman in Athens and are liaising with authorities in Greece,” a Police Scotland spokesperson said.

The investigation continues as authorities work to determine who used Ms. Ross's phone after her death.

Key Insight
“Police believe Ms Ross's phone was used after her death to send messages and put people 'off the scent'; texts to family and friends on 15 July reportedly said she 'needed some time to herself' and 'wanted to be alone for a while.' Authorities are working to establish who may have been using the phone.”
