Mali is facing escalating violence as loud explosions and gunfire erupted near the Kati military base on Saturday, April 25, 2026.
Two loud explosions were reported shortly before 6 am (06:00 GMT), leading to immediate military response as troops fortified the area.
The Malian army indicated it is engaged in active conflict with
unidentified “terrorist groups” across the country. In a statement, military officials reported,
"fighting is ongoing" and that their
defence and security forces are currently engaged in repelling the attackers.
Reports of attacks also emerged from Gao in the north-east and Sevare in central Mali, highlighting a nationwide threat. Simultaneously, flights into Bamako were canceled amid concerns about the safety of the Modibo Keita International Airport, where
gunfire was heard near a military camp housing Russian mercenary forces.
This turbulence comes during a time when Mali is governed by a military junta led by Gen Assimi Goïta, who initially seized power in a coup in 2020, vowing to tackle the longstanding security crisis intensified by a separatist rebellion and subsequent Islamist militant activities. The junta had initially garnered public support for its promises to enhance security in the nation.
