Luigi Mangione faces a complex legal battle in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, with his case bouncing between state and federal courts since his arrest in December 2024.1
The Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg announced an 11-count indictment against Mangione, charging him with murder and related offenses. Simultaneously, the U.S. Attorney's Office unsealed a four-count criminal complaint for interstate stalking and weapons offenses resulting in murder.
Mangione was apprehended after a nationwide manhunt, following the release of surveillance footage showing a masked individual approaching Thompson and opening fire outside a Midtown hotel.
The case has seen numerous court appearances over the past year and a half, with the defense recently achieving a partial victory when a federal judge dismissed two death penalty counts against him.
In April 2025, former Attorney General Pam Bondi announced that the Department of Justice would seek the death penalty, but the federal trial date has been postponed multiple times as the Manhattan DA's Office aims to try its case first.
The prosecution has also sparked public interest, with supporters of Mangione rallying against the health care industry after investigators found the phrase "delay - deny - defend" etched on shell casings from the shooting scene.
