Indian grocery delivery startup KiranaPro has been hit by a severe cyberattack, resulting in the complete wiping of its data.
The breach was discovered on May 26 when KiranaPro executives attempted to log into their Amazon Web Services (AWS) account and found that hackers had gained access to their root accounts on both AWS and GitHub.
"The multi-factor code had changed when we tried to log into our AWS account last week," said Kumar, a company representative, explaining that all their Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) services, which enable clients to run applications on virtual computers, were deleted.
KiranaPro operates as a buyer app, facilitating grocery purchases from local shops and supermarkets, with a customer base of 55,000 and 30,000-35,000 active buyers across 50 cities placing around 2,000 orders daily.
The startup is now taking legal action against former employees who failed to provide their GitHub access credentials, which are crucial for investigating the breach.
"We are filing cases against our former employees who have not submitted their credentials for accessing their GitHub accounts to check their logs," said Ravindran, the founder.
This incident highlights the vulnerabilities startups face in cloud security and the critical importance of safeguarding access credentials to prevent such damaging attacks.
