April 22, 2026, while traveling in
al-Tiri, Khalil and Faraj were struck during an Israeli air raid. Faraj, in recovery at al-Zahraa hospital, recalled Khalil’s desperate plea for companionship, stating, “When I said I wanted to go to sleep, Amal came closer and hugged me and told me, ‘Zeinab, don’t leave me alone.’”
Following the attack, it took hours for emergency personnel to retrieve Khalil’s body; it was only after midnight that the Lebanese army and civil defense received clearance to respond. The grim situation has exacerbated concerns over safety, with
nine journalists reportedly killed by Israeli strikes in Lebanon since March 2, as stated by Lebanon’s information ministry. This ongoing violence has drawn criticism from organizations like the
Committee to Protect Journalists, labeling these actions as incitement. The escalation of conflict continues amidst a fragile cease-fire, raising fears of further casualties.
