Two Russian influencers, Angela Nikolau and Vanya Beerkus, made headlines after scaling the Empire State Building for a marriage proposal. The couple, known for their daring climbs without safety equipment, reached the top of the iconic 1,454ft-tall structure on Wednesday.
Holding a banner that read: “When the power of love beats the love of power, the world knows peace,” they celebrated their engagement before descending.
However, the stunt was not part of Netflix’s ‘Skywalkers’ documentary. Sources confirmed that it had no connection to the show, and Netflix declined to comment on the incident.26
As they began their descent around 1pm local time (6pm BST), the NYPD responded swiftly, deploying helicopters and officers to the scene. The couple was arrested shortly after reaching the ground.3
This is not the first time Nikolau and Beerkus have faced legal trouble for their climbs; they were previously arrested in Paris in 2017 for scaling the Basilica of Sainte-Clotilde.
The Empire State Building has a history of daring climbs, including a notable ascent by Alain Robert, known as “the French Spider-Man,” who free-climbed the building in 1994.
The couple shared their engagement on Instagram, showcasing Nikolau's ring against the stunning backdrop of New York City.
