India's auto retail sales reached 25.91 lakh units in July 2026, marking a 25.89% year-on-year increase, the highest growth for July outside COVID-affected years, according to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA).1

The Maruti Suzuki Dzire topped the sales charts with 23,791 units, a 14% increase from 20,895 units in July 2025. The top 25 cars sold a total of 3.54 lakh units, reflecting a 35% year-on-year growth from 2.62 lakh units last year.2346

Other notable performers included the Wagon R with 23,398 units (up 59%), Ertiga at 21,606 units (up 30%), and Swift with 21,538 units (up 52%). The Tata Punch emerged as the best-selling SUV, nearly doubling its sales to 21,313 units (up 98%).

FADA Vice President Sai Giridhar stated, “July ’26 has etched itself into Indian Auto Retail history — for the first time on record, every single category posted its best-ever July.” The growth was broad-based, with Two-Wheelers up 28.25%, Commercial Vehicles up 24.04%, and Passenger Vehicles up 19.13% year-on-year.

Total EV sales reached 3,27,901 units, the highest for any month, pushing overall EV penetration to 12.7% from 9.6% a year ago. “With FY ’27’s first four months EV retail sales up 18.27%, the runway into the festive season is firmly intact,” Giridhar added.5
