Tata Motors led the charge, securing a dominant 42.87% market share with 13,158 units sold, marking a 63.17% increase from the previous year, despite a 3.80% decline from July's figures.45

Overall, the electric vehicle (EV) penetration in the car market slightly decreased from 7.90% in July to 7.63% in August, yet it remains significantly higher than the 5.83% recorded a year ago.3

The total retail sales of electric passenger vehicles grew by around 52% year-on-year, showcasing the ongoing shift towards electric mobility in India.

Overall, August 2026 marked a record month for electric vehicle sales in India, with a total of 2,98,448 units sold across all categories, reflecting a 53% increase year-on-year.8
