The Indian Air Force (IAF) conducted a critical rescue operation early Monday, saving 14 individuals stranded in the flooded Bomjir River in Arunachal Pradesh's Lower Dibang Valley amid severe flooding across northeastern India.

Heavy rains have caused widespread devastation, with the death toll in the region rising to 38, including nine in Arunachal Pradesh and 11 in Assam. The Assam government reported that 5.15 lakh people have been affected, and 12,610 hectares of farmland submerged.

The floods have impacted multiple states including Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh, with over four lakh people affected in more than 20 districts. Landslides have further worsened the situation, notably killing seven members of a family in Arunachal Pradesh after their car was struck on National Highway 13.

In Manipur, around 20,000 people have been affected by flooding caused by continuous rainfall and embankment breaches. The northeastern region has also seen military casualties, with three army personnel dead and six missing after a landslide hit a camp in Sikkim.

Political leaders have criticized the government's flood response, with Congress leaders urging better use of relief funds and transparency. The Modi government faces scrutiny over flood management despite promises to make Assam flood-free.

"The news of loss of life due to heavy rains in the northeastern states, especially Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, is extremely sad," said a former Congress chief.

The IAF's rescue operation highlights ongoing efforts to provide humanitarian assistance amid one of the worst flood seasons in the region in recent years.
