India and Canada have agreed to restore diplomatic relations after a nearly two-year freeze triggered by tensions over the 2022 killing of a Sikh separatist in Canada.

The breakthrough was announced following a bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Kananaskis, Canada.

"They have pressed the reset button," said a former Indian high commissioner to Canada, highlighting the significance of this diplomatic thaw.

Both leaders agreed to appoint new high commissioners to their respective capitals, aiming to restore full diplomatic services for citizens and businesses.

The two countries also committed to resuming stalled trade negotiations, including restarting talks on an "Early Progress Trade Agreement (EPTA)," seen as a precursor to a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).

According to Indian foreign secretary Vikram Misri, the meeting was "positive and constructive," with both sides agreeing to take calibrated steps to rebuild trust through senior-level trade talks and ministerial engagements.

The diplomatic freeze began after Canada accused India of involvement in the killing of Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia, leading to reciprocal expulsions of diplomats and a halt in high-level contacts.

The restoration of ties is welcomed by the large Indian diaspora in Canada, numbering around 1.8 million Indo-Canadians, with hopes for improved people-to-people exchanges and economic cooperation.

Trade between the two nations reached US $23 billion last year, underscoring the importance of renewed economic dialogue.

The leaders emphasized mutual respect for concerns and sensitivities, and the importance of cooperation on law enforcement and counter-terrorism, reflecting India's zero-tolerance policy against terrorism.

This diplomatic reset marks a significant step toward stabilizing bilateral relations and enhancing cooperation across multiple domains after a period of strained ties.
