The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall in parts of Uttara Kannada, Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru and Kodagu districts on Tuesday, June 17.

A senior scientist at IMD Bengaluru explained that two weather systems are fuelling the widespread rainfall, as per TOI report. "The widely distributed rainfall across Karnataka is attributed to two prevailing weather conditions, an upper air cyclonic circulation over Marathwada and a trough extending up to coastal Andhra Pradesh across Telangana," the scientist said.

Udupi, Chikkamagaluru, Kodagu, Shivamogga, Uttara Kannada, and Dakshina Kannada have all been placed under a red warning, which denotes exceptionally severe rains.

Meanwhile, scattered heavy rainfall is predicted in isolated regions of the state. The rainfall is likely to be accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. The rainfall is likely to continue for the next three to four days, said IMD.
