The India Meteorological Department has maintained a red alert for June 17, warning of exceptionally heavy rainfall in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall across Karnataka’s coastal districts including Uttara Kannada, Udupi, and Dakshina Kannada on June 17.

This alert covers other districts such as Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, and Kodagu, with orange alerts in Belagavi, Hassan, and South Interior Karnataka. The widespread rainfall is driven by two weather systems: an upper air cyclonic circulation over Marathwada and a trough extending to coastal Andhra Pradesh.

"The widely distributed rainfall across Karnataka is attributed to two prevailing weather conditions, an upper air cyclonic circulation over Marathwada and a trough extending up to coastal Andhra Pradesh across Telangana," said a senior IMD scientist.

The rainfall is expected to continue through June 20, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 50 kmph in some areas.

Residents in coastal and interior regions have been advised to exercise caution, especially in red and orange alert zones.

"Scattered moderate and scattered heavy & very heavy rains are likely today with gusty winds in coastal & hilly districts of the state," tweeted the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre.

In Bengaluru, a yellow alert is in place with light to moderate rainfall expected, along with thunderstorms and gusty winds up to 50 kmph. Temperatures across the state are forecast to range between 20°C and 27°C.

While rainfall intensity may reduce from June 19 onward, occasional showers are still expected.

The IMD’s warnings aim to prepare residents and authorities for potential disruptions caused by the intense monsoon activity affecting Karnataka’s coastal and interior districts.
