- CarbonStrong has raised Rs 12.5 crore from IAN Angel Fund, Zerodha's Rainmatter, and others.
- The startup has conducted several customer trials and paid pilots, and is now looking to convert these early trials into long-term supply relationships.
- CarbonStrong aims to build a capacity of up to 100,000 tonnes a year over the next 2 years.
- The binder is made by processing industrial wastes from coal, steel and other sectors into high-performance cementitious materials, which cuts cost and carbon footprint.
- Harsh Jain, Co-founder and CEO, CarbonStrong, stated that India will build most of its future in the next 25-30 years, aiming for every ton of concrete to be stronger, cost-efficient, and lower in carbon footprint.
- CarbonStrong is working to expand the range of industrial wastes that can be turned into useful cement substitutes, including materials made from steel slag, copper slag, mine-tailings and other industrial byproducts.
CarbonStrong, founded in 2022 by Harsh Jain and Vikramaditya Singh, is pioneering low-carbon binders by upcycling industrial waste, replacing up to 50% of cement in concrete. The recent funding of Rs 12.5 crore will facilitate the establishment of its first production facility and expand its team.1
The startup's innovative binder is created by processing industrial waste from sectors like coal and steel into high-performance cementitious materials. This approach not only reduces costs but also significantly lowers the carbon footprint of concrete production, maintaining performance without altering existing plants or processes.
Harsh Jain stated, “India will build most of its future in the next 25-30 years. We want every ton of that concrete to be stronger, cost-efficient, and lower in carbon footprint. This investment helps us take our now-proven technology to industrial scale.”6
CarbonStrong has successfully conducted several customer trials and is now focused on converting these into long-term supply relationships with ready-mix concrete companies, builders, and contractors. The startup is also targeting precast concrete and paver block manufacturers while expanding the range of industrial wastes utilized for cement substitutes, including materials from steel slag, copper slag, and mine tailings.24578
With a goal of achieving an annual capacity of 100,000 tonnes within two years, CarbonStrong is poised to make a significant impact in the construction industry by promoting sustainable practices.
“The startup's binder processes industrial wastes from coal and steel into cementitious materials, cutting cost and carbon footprint without changing plants or process. Co-founder and CEO Harsh Jain says the investment helps scale now-proven technology as India builds its future over the next 25-30 years.”
