- HDFC Bank said on Saturday that it would fast-track the appointment of Jagdishan’s successor.
- Sashidhar Jagdishan has declined reappointment, prompting the bank to begin its CEO hunt.
- Macquarie analysts last week said uncertainty surrounding Jagdishan’s tenure had been weighing on the stock.
- Rikin Shah, senior vice-president at IIFL Capital, stated that Jagdishan not seeking a reappointment removes the risk of a truncated tenure by the RBI, which would have prolonged uncertainty and weighed on the stock price.
- Shah also mentioned that a credible external candidate could provide a leadership reset and a longer runway to steer the bank.
Sashidhar Jagdishan, CEO of HDFC Bank, has announced his retirement in October, choosing not to seek reappointment for a second term. This decision comes as the bank accelerates its search for a successor, evaluating both internal and external candidates.12
Jagdishan has led HDFC Bank since October 2020. The bank is reportedly considering Kaizad Bharucha, the deputy managing director, as a potential internal candidate for the CEO position. Bharucha, who manages the bank's retail and wholesale operations, is not set to retire until 2029, positioning him as a strong contender.
The urgency in finding a successor follows recent governance issues, including the abrupt resignation of part-time chairman Atanu Chakraborty, who cited misalignment with his personal values. An independent legal review commissioned by the bank found no evidence of governance failure, but the situation has raised concerns about leadership stability.
Analysts have noted that Jagdishan's decision to step down may alleviate uncertainties that have affected the bank's stock price. Rikin Shah from IIFL Capital remarked, “We believe that Jagdishan not seeking a reappointment removes the risk of him getting a truncated tenure by the RBI.” The search for a credible external candidate could signal a leadership reset for the bank, providing a longer runway for future growth.45
Macquarie analysts have also indicated that the uncertainty surrounding Jagdishan's tenure has been a factor weighing on the bank's stock performance.3
“Rikin Shah of IIFL Capital said Jagdishan not seeking reappointment removes the risk of a truncated tenure by the RBI, which had prolonged uncertainty and weighed on the stock. Macquarie analysts last week echoed that uncertainty had been a drag on the share price.”
