Cybercriminals are capitalizing on the immense hype surrounding GTA 6, which is set for release in November 2026. According to NordVPN's Threat Intelligence team, a surge in malware, scams, and phishing sites has been observed, particularly as pre-orders are rumored to open soon.

The CTO of NordVPN, Marijus Briedis, emphasized the dangers, noting, “When people are desperate to get early access to something, their guard comes down.” This behavior creates a prime opportunity for cybercriminals, who exploit the excitement to harvest data from victims or deploy more malicious strategies.

Research indicates that the threats range from amateur phishing attempts to sophisticated malware campaigns targeting platforms that GTA 6 is not confirmed to support. Notably, some fake sites promise exclusive beta keys for consoles like PS5 and Xbox Series, preying on the fervor of gamers.

NordVPN’s findings include instances where fake packages disguise malware as game files, including one that masqueraded as an Nvidia graphics driver, allowing attackers to compromise devices further.

Additionally, an Android app utilizing GTA's branding directs users to subscription-based sites while serving unsolicited ads.

The urgency of protecting oneself against these deceptions is higher than ever, highlighted by NordVPN's tracking of “hundreds of amateur phishing pages” targeting sensitive credentials on platforms like Rockstar Social Club.
