Leaks indicate that the technology, which utilizes IR hardware concealed behind the display, was once planned for release this year but encountered unforeseen challenges. While testers previously noted that it performed comparably to Apple's Face ID under various lighting conditions, it has yet to demonstrate the necessary reliability for launch.
Despite some promising progress, a rushed rollout could hinder user experience. As noted in the reports,
“the feature isn’t ready yet” and “users won’t see Project Toscana available at launch of the new phones.” While Google has not officially acknowledged the existence of Project Toscana, the company allegedly ran UX tests with prototypes and received positive feedback regarding its performance. However, the consistent word from leaks remains that
the feature won’t be ready in time for the Pixel 11 launch.
In terms of other enhancements, the Pixel 11 lineup is anticipated to include several hardware upgrades, including new cameras, brighter OLED displays, and a MediaTek M90 modem, suggesting that while Project Toscana’s absence is a setback, there are still noteworthy improvements to be expected.
