Google has published an explanation on the official “Android Help” site regarding the Android AICore storage drain linked to updates of its AI model, Gemini Nano. The updates require a temporary increase in storage space as both old and new versions are stored simultaneously for up to three days as a security measure.
This process allows for a seamless rollback if issues arise during the update, enabling users to revert to the prior version without the need for significant data redownloads.
“If the update encounters problems, the device can immediately revert to the previous version,” Google noted. Once the new update stabilizes, the old version is deleted automatically, thereby freeing up storage space.
Google emphasizes that this procedure represents a trade-off between storage usage and user experience, clarifying that higher storage usage is a normal and expected behavior during background updates of the “Gemini Nano” model.
The AICore app enhances various functionalities in applications like the “Recorder,” “Gboard,” and “Google Translate,” and operates entirely on the device's local processor, ensuring that
