Google Chrome is advancing its transition to
Manifest V3 by releasing updates 150 and 151, which will eliminate the last workarounds for older ad blockers like
uBlock Origin. These updates, expected in late June and July 2026, will remove critical flags that allowed these extensions to function.
According to
Google developer Devlin Cronin, the removal of
Manifest V2 extensions is a significant step:
“MV2 extensions are no longer allowed in any supported version of Chrome, and we are removing support for them and the associated functionality.” This change is part of a broader effort to enhance security and performance within the browser.
The updates will specifically target the last remaining loopholes, including the flag that allowed users to continue using these extensions. Chrome 150 will remove the primary technical workaround, while Chrome 151 will eliminate the remaining flags, such as
ExtensionManifestV2Unsupported and
AllowLegacyMV2Extensions.
As a result, many popular ad blockers will cease to function, prompting users to seek alternatives or adapt to the new extension policies. This move reflects Chrome's commitment to a more secure browsing experience, albeit at the cost of user choice in ad-blocking tools.
