Friedrich Merz, Germany's Chancellor, addressed concerns over U.S. troop reductions in Germany, aiming to solidify relations with America amid tensions. He asserted that the planned withdrawal of 5,000 soldiers is unrelated to his disputes with Donald Trump regarding Iran.
The U.S. Defense Secretary, Pete Hegseth, indicated that this withdrawal, projected to occur over the next 12 months, will decrease U.S. military presence in Germany by about 14%, impacting a base housing approximately 36,000 soldiers, the highest number in Europe.
Merz emphasized, “I remain convinced that the Americans are the most important partner for us in the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO),” illustrating his commitment to maintaining strong transatlantic ties despite the announced troop reduction. On this issue, he firmly stated, “no connection” exists between the troop drawdown and his other geopolitical disputes.
