“This is another heartbreaking loss for our wildland fire family,” said U.S. Wildland Fire Service Chief Brian Fennessy. “We mourn the loss of Nate while continuing to grieve the deaths of Emily, Nick and Sydney.” Matthews had been receiving medical care for his injuries prior to his death, which marks the fourth firefighter fatality in Colorado this year.10
The Knowles fire was part of a series of wildfires that started around June 26 and has since been fully contained. A serious accident investigation team is reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident, and memorial arrangements for Matthews are pending.
The western U.S. has faced numerous large fires this summer, exacerbated by dry weather and erratic winds.
