- Five more people have been arrested by detectives investigating a crash that killed seven people, including two police officers.
- The five arrested on Tuesday were a boy aged 16, an 18-year-old, and a man of 21, all on suspicion of participating in an organised crime group; a 55-year-old on suspicion of assisting an offender; and a 23-year-old on suspicion of making threats to kill.
- Police said the group had links to serious and organised criminal activity and that four of the five had a total of 37 previous convictions for offences such as possession of a bladed article, car theft, possession of drugs, racially aggravated intentional harassment, and numerous driving offences.
- The five arrests on Tuesday came a day after Cleveland police announced 12 people (nine men and three women) had been arrested after reports of two vehicles, the VW Passat and a Volvo XC60, being driven dangerously.
- Of the 12 previously arrested, four were arrested on suspicion of participating in an organised crime group, four on suspicion of possessing a firearm, and four were also accused of possessing class A and B drugs with intent to supply.
- Two of the 12 previously arrested have appeared in court: Kai Beattie, 19, charged with possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life, and Cameron George, 26, remanded in custody to appear at Teesside crown court on 21 September charged with drugs offences and possession of criminal property.
Five more individuals have been arrested in connection with a tragic crash on the A66 that resulted in the deaths of seven people, including two police officers, PC Matthew Blades, 37, and PC Tom Clough, 38. The officers were killed when a Volkswagen Passat, pursued by police, collided with their marked armed response vehicle while driving the wrong way down the highway.
