Intensified fighting and seasonal floods have displaced over 200,000 people in Sudan's Kordofan region, according to the UN's International Organization for Migration (IOM). The conflict, which erupted in April 2023, has resulted in at least 59,000 deaths and forced 14 million people from their homes.1

IOM Director General Amy Pope emphasized that “the warning signs are impossible to ignore”, as families face violence, loss of access to essential services, and the burden of destructive floods. In Kordofan's Sheikan district, displacement has surged 25 percent over the past eight months, with drone attacks disrupting electricity and water supply in the city of el-Obeid.39

The humanitarian crisis is exacerbated by seasonal flooding in North Darfur, where heavy rains have damaged nearly 1,350 homes and displaced over 1,000 families. The IOM reports that 8.6 million people have been internally displaced since the war began, with 4.2 million fleeing to neighboring countries. The agency has delivered 1,750 metric tons of humanitarian supplies to those in need, but ongoing violence and infrastructure attacks continue to hinder relief efforts.678

As the situation deteriorates, the IOM warns that 33.7 million people in Sudan require humanitarian assistance, highlighting the urgent need for international support to address this escalating crisis.
