FDA plans wider inspections after cancelling Zepto's Dharavi license for food safety breaches

The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cancelled the license of Zepto's Dharavi warehouse following a stringent inspection that revealed multiple food safety violations.

The FDA found fungal growth in food articles, improper storage near stagnant water, and expired products mixed with fresh stock. Inspectors also noted that the facility's floors were wet and filthy, with food items stored directly on the floor in a disorganized and unsanitary manner, violating cold storage norms.

This crackdown was initiated after information from Minister of State for FDA Yogesh Kadam prompted the inspection. The license suspension will remain until Zepto demonstrates full compliance with food safety regulations.

Zepto has responded by stating it is taking corrective action and cooperating with authorities to resolve the issues and resume operations. Meanwhile, the FDA plans to expand inspections across quick-commerce platforms to ensure food safety standards are upheld.

"The licence suspension will remain in effect until Zepto demonstrates compliance with food safety regulations," the FDA confirmed.

This move highlights increasing regulatory scrutiny on rapid delivery services amid growing concerns over food hygiene and safety.
